With Valentine’s Day right around the corner I spent some time meditating on its meaning, because that’s who I am, and came to a new conclusion.
If I treated Valentine’s Day like Mother’s Day or Father’s Day and my marriage more like an individual person who I am deeply thankful for and appreciate of, well… that changes the meaning for me entirely. So, this Valentine’s Day, my husband and I are going to treat our Marriage like an individual person who has weathered many storms with us in the last 6 years.
If you would like to take on Valentine’s Day in a whole new light with us, then here are some ideas for you to consider:
1. Forgo the traditional Valentine’s Day card
Take the time to write a love and/or appreciation letter. It will mean way more coming from your heart.
2. Create a Tradition
Make Valentine’s Day something to look forward to every year with your spouse by making a tradition together. It might be that you always get take-out and watch a favorite movie from your early dating years on the couch. You could make it a tradition to try something thrill-seeking every year or you could try out a new Bed & Breakfast at a new destination.
3. Read Your Marriage Vows (& add a new one!)
Take turns reading your marriage vows, whatever they were, to one another then each add on a new one. Life gets messy and it changes, so take the opportunity to recommit your heart to being “all in” to your marriage.
4. Take your marriage on a walk down memory lane
Use Valentine’s Day to remember why you fell in love and reminisce together. Discuss what you appreciate about each other most recently and turn the 60 Second Blessing into a whole conversation.
5. Be Naked
Seriously, do something naked together. And while sex is of course highly encouraged, this could also be giving one another a massage or reading a naughty book out loud together or even wrapping up in the same blanket watching Netflix (or one of our videos at Marriage365) and being quiet and close to each other.
